The public hearing that was scheduled to take place on September 19th was moved to November 21 by request of the petitioner's agent. All those interested, please make note.
This will be the community's opportunity to be given 10 minutes to voice any concerns about the proposed change to rezone the gas station on the lot currently to a commercial car wash. Please continue your awareness of the matter. There are several other posts that hold a lot of dialogue that gives different views and possible consequences on the issue for those who would like to search "car wash" or "rezoning petition". Also look online at charlotte.gov and navigate to planning then zoning to learn more about the process.
The public hearing is:
November 21 at 6:00pm
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center
600 E. Fourth Street
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Residents in Charlotte's Plaza Shamrock neighborhood are fighting against having a large car wash at The Plaza and Herrin Avenue.
Hundreds of them have signed a petition asking city leaders to say ‘no’ to the project.
Residents said the plan is not consistent with the feel of the neighborhood.
“This is a neighborhood; as you can see, there are houses right here within 20 feet of where they're wanting to put a large car wash,” resident Michelle Fox said. “It's just not consistent with the neighborhood.”
The online petition asks leaders not to rezone 1.5 acres from neighborhood business to general business at the site because it’s inconsistent with the historic neighborhood.
There are already five other car washes within a 1.5-mile radius.
“Something like this is going to bring in traffic outside the neighborhood and we would rather see local neighborhood businesses continue (to) develop here,” Fox said.
The site plan for the project indicates the developer will be sensitive to neighbors and all "freestanding light will be fully shielded and downwardly directed."
It said all new detached lighting installed will be limited to 20 feet.
Some residents, including Donna Johnson, said the car wash could be a good thing for the community.
“I do live in this neighborhood,” Johnson said. “I think it would be a good idea to have your car washed.
Get your car cleaned right away. I don't think it would be that much noise.”
City leaders said a public hearing is being planned for later this year, but the date hasn’t been set yet.
Channel 9 reached out to District 1 Councilwoman Patsy Kinsy and the petitioner for comment.
Channel 9 is waiting to hear a response.

The Plaza Shamrock Neighborhood Association (PSNA) has teamed with the North Carolina Wildlife Federation (NCWF) to install our very own 6'x10' pollinator garden! This project is lead in Charlotte and surrounding areas by Angelique Hjarding, Director of the Pollinator and Wildlife Habitat Programs with the NCWF. http://www.butterflyhighway.org
The Butterfly Highway is a vital instrument in educating communities about the role we all play in the health of important pollinators, and also in creating more spaces for the Monarch Butterfly (whose numbers have been in decline due to the loss of habitat and use of pesticides) to nest and thrive. Please give a warm salute to this latest installment in our community, placed at the corner of Herrin Ave. and The Plaza, courtesy of The Giant Penny. All plants were donated by Ms. Hjarding and the NCWF, all other materials by the PSNA, and thoughtfully installed by neighborhood volunteers.
Please feel welcomed to see the garden whenever you like! Contact your association if you would like to be on the list to help with future projects like this by going to the contact us form, or emailing: firstname.lastname@example.org

Next week the Plaza-Shamrock Neighborhood Association is holding a special meeting with Animal Care and Control officer Julia Conner discussing how AC&C operates, tether laws, free clinics/services, adoption programs, overpopulation, nuisance animals along with many more important issues. She will also walk us through the process of picking up stray animals to adoption/euthanasia.
Since this is a topic that many folks have very strong feelings about we will ask everyone to keep all questions for Officer Conner for the end of the program as she will most likely answer your question during her program.
We hope to see you there! Please feel free to share this information with your neighbors.

Join your neighbors for the 2nd annual Shamrock Shuffle 5K to benefit the students of Shamrock Gardens Elementary school.
The Shamrock Shuffle was created to benefit the students of Shamrock Gardens Elementary school, which serves the Plaza Midwood, Country Club Heights and Plaza Shamrock neighborhoods of Charlotte. Shamrock Gardens is a Title One school with 85% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. As such we are seeking to “fill in the gaps” by creating an event that will support the school, and strengthen the relationship between the school and the communities that surrounds it.
Last year’s Inaugural Shamrock Shuffle raised more than $4,000 and was a huge success due to the tireless work of all of our SGE and neighborhood volunteers and Sponsors. Adults and Children alike had a great morning full of fun, exercise and camaraderie by cheering each other on during the Track and Field Events. The funds raised went to sturdy iPad covers and books for our SGE scholars by request of teachers, management and PTA.
This year’s event hopes to prove the same amount of fun. The funds this year, hoping to total over $6,000, hope to fund the $20,000 necessary to continue the Shamrock Scholar Summer Academy. Last year the Roberts Award Grant made this camp possible. The SSSA camp is a results based camp and targets rising 4th and 5th graders (and potentially 3rd) who need additional support with reading, writing, and math skills over the summer and whose families might not otherwise be able to afford such and camp. Not only is this camp educational, funding also provides, field trips, and other enrichment activities.
